I Was Never Arrested Over Attempt to Buy Baby - Bayelsa Perm Sec Slams Police Claims

As allegations become rife that he has been arrested in connection with an attempt to sell off a baby, a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa state has cleared the air on the issue.

A serving permanent secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service, Dr. Wisdom Sawyer yesterday faulted the claims by the State Police Command that he was  arrested over an alleged attempt to buy a new born baby for the sum of N200,000, Leadership reports.

Sawyer, who is also the owner of the Survival Hospital located at Igbogene community of Yenagoa LGA of the  state  was at the weekend reportedly arrested by a strike team of command over alleged attempts to make the illegal purchase. He was reportedly arrested following a complaint from the mother of the baby.

However, Sawyer, in a  statement issued yesterday in Yenagoa, said though the mother of the new born baby was a patient in his hospital and was delivered of a baby, and that the claims that the baby was offered for sale was untrue.

According to him, the 24 year old mother, Nnenna Nwachukwu, who is a commercial sex  worker, had approached him in November 2015 to abort an eight month old pregnancy but he declined.

He advised her to bear the child and put it up for adoption rather than go through with an abortion. He displayed documents showing  that both agreed to give up the child for adoption.

Sawyer said he was surprised when he was visited by the police and  rights activists, FIDA alleging his involvement in child racketeering scam.

He said: ‘‘The document was an undertaking by the patient Nnnena Nwachukwi to transfer the  baby to government since she cannot care for the baby and not a document for sale of baby as alleged."
