We were all reminded of this not so shocking fact this morning
following the news that Coronation Street have sacked Katie Redford and
will recast the role of Bethany Platt after it emerged she was in fact
25 not 19.
She is of course not the first to have a stage age and a real age
and she won’t be the last. Here’s eleven other stars who have also bent
the truth.
Nicole Scherzinger of Pussy Cat Dolls |
Nicole Scherzinger
In 2008 former Pussycat Doll Nicole, now 36, admitted that she
been lying about her age. She revealed she was about to turn 30, when
the bands website claimed she was two years younger – 28. When
confronted about the white lie she said: “I should’ve said I was 27!”
Agnes Deyn
Agnes Deyn
Model/ actress Agnes Deyn, claimed she was 18 when she met a
modelling agent back in 2006. She was in fact 24 – so not a teenage at
all.
She admitted: “When I decided I would really do modelling I was
like 18, and I think at the time that was quite old for a new face, so
we knocked off a few years.”
Agnes is also not her real name – she was born Laura Hollins.
Eminem
Eminem
Rapper Eminem, 42, is probably the last person we’d expect to lie
about his age. In 1999 he said in an interview he was 24 when he was in
fact 27. Ouch
Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj
Nicki, who is rumoured to have a fake bottom, also had a fake age
when she started out. In 2011 the star was involved in a flight and
unfortunately the police report released revealed her real age – which
wasn’t 26 but 28. There’s two morals to this story: Don’t lie about your
age and don’t get in trouble with the police.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez
Here’s another example of the police exposing someone’s real
age. J-Lo had always claimed she was born in 1970 but when she and then
boyfriend Puff Daddy were questioned about a shooting incident that
occurred in a nightclub, she was forced to admit she was actually born
in 1969 .
James Blunt
James Blunt
James not so blunt, nor truthful for that matter. In an attempt to
appeal to a younger audience, JB shaved three years off his age until he
was busted by a broadsheet aged 36. That's not such a Beautiful lie.
Nadine Coyle
Nadine Coyle
The celebs don’t just pretend to be younger – if they need to be
older to get something they will. In 2001 Nadine auditioned for Irish
Popstars and even won a place in a band before it was revealed that
she’d lied about her age. She was 16 years old, two years younger than
the minimum age requirement of 18.
There was a happy ending though as she went to enter Popstars: the
Rivals in the UK, bag a place in Girls Aloud, got famous, went to the
US, opened an Irish bar, released some singles and the rest is a whole
lotta history.
Nelly
Nelly
Nelly the rapper was betrayed by his birth certificate when Teen
People put him in their Hottest Stars Under 25 round-up – a fact
confirmed by his reps at the time. Only, one call later and it suddenly
emerged that he was, in fact, 28. Oh the shame. Try sticking a plaster
over that one Mr Nelly.
Geri Halliwell
Geri Halliwell
The Spice Girl claimed to be 21 when the group first burst onto the
scene. But it later emerged she was in fact 25 (which we always thought
was more likely). She went on to celebrate her 29th birthday a few
times before Victoria Beckham let slip that Geri had already turned 30.
That’s what friends are for, eh?
Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock
Sandra is another example of someone else pretending to be older to
get a job. The brunette beauty admitted that she lied to producers of
Love Potion (no, us neither) telling them she was 29 in order to place
an ‘older scientist’ when she was in fact a few years younger than that.
She was later outed by Vanity Fair magazine – this time for pretending to be younger.
Her response: “After a while, you have no idea how old you are because you've lied so many times.
"I always said I would never lie, but one time, when I didn't it worked against me. So I figure you just keep them guessing."
Faith Paloma
Paloma Faith
The British singer knocked four years off her age when she was trying to get signed.
She admitted: “When I was asked what my age was in that first meeting, I blurted out 23, when I was actually 27.”
“I didn’t plan on doing it beforehand and it wasn’t a calculated thing.”
She went on to say: “It was only afterwards I realised why I said it.
“I remember reading about KT Tunstall being old, and she was 27
at the time. So I felt that everyone was going to focus on my age, not
my music. I thought I’d try and protect myself in that way.
“I think if I’d said I was 27, I wouldn’t have got signed. One hundred per cent.”
